Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been used for centuries to treat various health conditions. The main principle behind acupuncture is that there are certain points on the body which when stimulated can help to improve the flow of energy or “qi” in the body. It is believed that when the qi in the body is not flowing properly, this can lead to various health problems.

There is growing evidence that acupuncture can be effective in treating a number of gynecological issues such as menstrual cramps, PMS, menopause symptoms, and even fertility issues.

Here are some ways in which acupuncture may help with gynecological and women’s health issues:

1. Menstrual Disorders: Acupuncture can help regulate the menstrual cycle and alleviate symptoms associated with menstrual disorders like cramps, bloating, and irregular periods. Additionally, acupuncture can help irregular periods and even amenorrhea.

2. Menstrual Cramps: One of the most common reasons why women seek out acupuncture treatment is for relief from menstrual cramps. Acupuncture has been shown to be effective in reducing the pain of menstrual cramps by relaxing the muscles and increasing blood flow to the area.

3. Menopause: Acupuncture can help reduce the intensity and frequency of hot flashes, improve sleep quality, and reduce anxiety and depression associated with menopause.

4. Pregnancy: Acupuncture may help alleviate morning sickness, fatigue, and pregnancy-related pain like lower back pain and headache.

5. Pelvic Pain: Acupuncture can help reduce pain associated with gynecological conditions such as endometriosis and pelvic inflammatory disease.

6. PCOS: Studies have found acupuncture to be a safe and effective treatment for PCOS. Specifically, it can help increase blood flow to the ovaries, reduce the number of ovarian cysts, reduce stress and cortisol levels, reduce ovarian volume, improve metabolic function of patients with obesity-type PCOS, and improve pregnancy rates in patients with PCOS who are undergoing IVF.

7. Infertility: Acupuncture may stimulate ovulation, improve the condition of the uterine lining, and enhance blood flow to the ovaries, all of which may improve the chances of conception. Acupuncture also stimulates the central nervous system which causes neurotransmitters and neurohormones to be released. For couples considering IVF, research has found that acupuncture increases IVF clinical pregnancy rate by 28%-32%, ongoing pregnancy rate by 42%, and live birth rate by 30%. In women with previously failed IVF cycles the clinical pregnancy rate increased by 60% and the live birth rate by 42% with acupuncture. Acupuncture also relieves stress, which can also be a roadblock to conceiving. In fact, high levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) have been shown to increase the risk of miscarriage in women once they become pregnant.

If you are experiencing problems such as menstrual cramps, infertility, PMS, PCOS, or menopause symptoms, it may be worth considering acupuncture as a treatment option!
